Do you give free estimates?
Yes. Call or text (864) 934-6396, or send the estimate form, and we’ll set up a time to look at the job with you.
Do you only do trees?
No. Fernwood started as a tree service and still is one — it’s on the sign. The same crew also builds landscapes, plants and tends gardens, and does one-off maintenance visits.

Across the Upstate of South Carolina. Call or text with your address and we’ll tell you right away if you’re in our area.
Are you insured?
Yes. Ask for a certificate of insurance with your estimate and we’ll send it over.
Tree work
What happens to the wood?
Your call, and it goes on the estimate. We can haul everything away, leave firewood-length rounds, or leave wood chips for your beds.
Is stump grinding included in a removal?
Only if it’s on the estimate. We list it as its own line so you can decide.
Can you take down a tree that’s right over my house?
Yes — that’s what rigging is for. The tree is cut in pieces that are lowered on ropes or lifted out by crane instead of dropped.
Do I need permission to remove a tree?
On most private residential lots in the Upstate, no. But some cities, HOAs and historic districts restrict removing larger trees, and a tree on a property line may be shared. If there’s any doubt, check with your city or HOA first — we’ll point out anything we notice at the walk-through.
When is the best time to prune?
For most shade trees, late winter while they’re dormant. Dead or dangerous wood can come out any time of year. Spring-flowering trees and shrubs are best pruned right after they bloom.
Will insurance pay for tree removal?
Often when a tree falls on a covered structure; usually not for a healthy tree you simply want gone. Check your policy, and photograph the damage before anything is moved.
Landscaping & gardens
Do you draw a plan before building?
For anything bigger than a bed refresh, yes. You get a scaled plan with a plant list and a price, and we build from it.
When is the best time to plant?
Fall. Trees and shrubs planted from late September through November grow roots all winter. Spring works too if you can keep up with watering through the first summer.
Can you fix a yard that floods?
Usually. We find where the water is coming from first — downspouts, a neighbor’s slope, a low spot — then regrade, add drains, or build a dry creek to carry it away.
Do you do small gardening jobs?
Yes. Garden visits can be a single morning of weeding, dividing and cutting back, or a regular schedule.
Maintenance
Do I have to sign a contract?
No. Book a single visit, a seasonal cleanup, or a regular schedule. Change it or stop it whenever you want.
How is maintenance priced?
By the visit, based on the size of the property and what’s on the list. You get the price before the first visit.
Do you haul away the debris?
Yes. Clippings, leaves and brush leave with us unless you’d rather keep them for compost.
Pine straw or mulch?
Pine straw is lighter, cheaper to refresh, and suits azaleas and slopes. Hardwood mulch looks more finished and lasts longer in beds. We’re happy to do either.
Estimates & scheduling
How fast can you come out?
Storm damage and dangerous trees go to the front of the line. Everything else is usually scheduled within a few days — call to get the current wait.
Do I need to be home for the estimate?
It helps, especially for trees near a property line or the house. If you can’t be, send photos and we’ll call you from the yard.
How do I pay?
When the job is finished and you’ve walked it with us. Ask about payment options when you book.
